Baptism is a sacrament in the United Church of Canada, along with Holy Communion.
The United Church offers baptism to all ages. In choosing to baptize an infant, parents and sponsors are recognizing that God loves the child and is at work in the child's life. They and their Church family also make a covenant to support the child as they grow in their faith.
How does Lakefield Untied Church celebrate baptism?
We baptize children and adults. Since infant children cannot understand what is being done, their parents and the church act on their behalf. We adults commit ourselves to love all our children, and teach them about God and living with Jesus as our best friend and guide.
Adult baptism
Today there are many adults who were not baptized as children. If you desire to make the commitment of baptism into Christ’s community, you are encouraged to speak to our minister.
When do baptisms take place?
We celebrate baptism during regular worship services, several times per year. Contact the church office for available dates in the coming months.
Preparation for baptism
We gather together those parents who are requesting baptism into one Preparation for Baptism session prior to the actual date. You will find it both meaningful and fun.
Presented below are some answers to some frequently asked questions, and some pointers for the day of your child’s baptism.
- Services at the Lakefield United Church begin promptly at 11:00am. Please arrive at the church at least 15 minutes before the service begins. A member of the Worship Committee will meet you and can answer any questions you may have when you arrive.
- The baptism party (parents, godparents, sponsor) are asked to sit in the front pew of the church. We can arrange to have an additional pew available at the front of the church if you have guests who wish to sit with you. Please contact the church office 705-652-3126 at least one week in advance if you would like a pew reserved.
- Please note that there is NO PHOTOGRAPHY allowed during the service. There will be an opportunity to take photos with the minister after the service.
- The sacrament of baptism takes place early in the service. Any children from your party who wish to take part in Sunday school are very welcome to accompany the other children as they leave the sanctuary. There is also a Nursery available should you need some quiet time with your child.
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have.
